Unicia R. Buster

Art Quilts
Richmond, VA

Having worked as a cashier, a prep cook, an administrative assistant, a teacher’s assistant, a graphic designer, an art specialist, an art teacher and, currently, a program manager, Unicia R. Buster created a personal modality to making art. She utilizes her different skill sets to not only perform a job, but to do create as a part of life, and she plays her part using all of her abilities.

A native of Richmond, Virginia, Buster turns all of her roles into a creation process, one that examines what it means to exist, live, and breathe as a human being. Buster was a featured speaker at TEDxYouth@RVA and the Good Grief Conference in Richmond. Featured in various media including WWBT NBC12, Nest Realty’s magazine, B-Side Collective Magazine, the Richmond Free Press, and the Richmond Times Dispatch, she was selected as the official artist for the annual 2nd Street Festival, twice, and for the annual RVA Community Makers program at the Virginia Museum of Fine Art. Buster has exhibited at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens, Reynolds Gallery, the VMFA, Elegba Folklore Society, the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia, the Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen, Artworks, the Library of Virginia, VCU Health, ArtFields (SC), John Hartell Gallery (NY), Palazzo Santacroce (Rome), Local Project Art Space (NY), International Visions (DC), and the Hunt Gallery at Mary Baldwin University (VA), among others. As a recipient of the VMFA Artist Fellowship in crafts, she explores her favorite medium—fabric—in her continuing and transforming role as a fine artist.  Unicia Buster earned a bachelor of fine arts degree from Cornell University, a master of arts degree from George Mason University, and a pre-health science post-baccalaureate certificate from Virginia Commonwealth University.
