All Together Now

In 2020, The Richmond Folk Festival proudly presented All Together Now, a two-part television program celebrating Virginia artists, aired on VPM Plus 57.1 in the Richmond area and will be rebroadcast this year in preparation for the 2023 Festival October 13-15. For viewing information in Richmond, Harrisonburg and Charlottesville, see the channel listing at the bottom of this page.

This television program, created specifically for the 2020 festival, featured new performances from some of Virginia’s most talented artists, along with several of our favorite past performances from the Festival’s Virginia Folklife Stage.

Filmed at Richmond’s Spacebomb Studios in partnership with VPM, viewers will enjoy brand new, 30-minute sets from Butcher Brown feat. J. Plunky Branch, Cora Harvey Armstrong, Jared Pool & Friends, and Kadencia.

Meet Butcher Brown: five groove merchants delivering a heady home-brew of jams and jazz, rhymes and beats—a funky, musical mix that makes one question why great music needs to be labeled as this category or that. The hybrid moniker “jazz/hip-hop” only begins to cover it. Their balance of raw energy and smooth sophistication, edgy improvisation with a generous dose of Southern roots (South coast hip-hop to Southern rock) reveals how equal opportunity they are in employing a wide range of musical styles, and how authentically they’ve absorbed it all.

Gospel artist Cora Harvey Armstrong hasn’t always lived the life she sings about. While she’s been singing and playing piano in churches on Sundays for most of her life, she spent decades drinking, partying, and living a “hellacious life” the other six days a week. Health problems and an abusive relationship compounded her struggle. When her father passed away in 1999, Armstrong rededicated herself to her faith and her music, and has started to earn the recognition that her talent as a singer, songwriter, and pianist deserves.

Jared Pool is a multi-instrumentalist who makes his home in Richmond, VA. His love of music was born from attending bluegrass festivals as a kid while growing up with other diverse musical influences from the Tidewater area.

Kadencia is a 13-piece orchestra comprised of professional musicians that have toured with some of the best local and internationally renowned bands in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Mid-Atlantic region. Founded in Puerto Rico by singer-songwriter Maurice Sanabria-Ortiz and percussionist Roberto Candelario, Kadencia was reborn in late 2018, with the help of percussionists Maurice “Tito” Sanabria and Santos Ramirez, and now calls Richmond, Virginia its home base. The band has quickly made an impact in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States through performances that deliver heavy-hitting original music. The band uses bomba, plena, and salsa to promulgate Puerto Rican culture, educate audiences on the Island’s native musical expressions, and make audiences move in ways they never knew possible.
