The Richmond Folk Festival proudly presents All Together Now, a two-part television program celebrating Virginia artists, to be aired on VPM Plus on Saturday, October 10 and Sunday, October 11 from 6:00pm - 8:00pm.
This television program, created specifically for the 2020 festival, features new performances from some of Virginia’s most talented artists, along with several of our favorite past performances from the Festival’s Virginia Folklife Stage.
Filmed at Richmond’s Spacebomb Studios in partnership with VPM, viewers will enjoy brand new, 30-minute sets from Butcher Brown feat. J. Plunky Branch, Cora Harvey Armstrong, Jared Pool & Friends, and Kadencia.
Butcher Brown feat. J. Plunky Branch
The hybrid moniker “jazz/hip-hop” only begins to cover who Butcher Brown really is. Collectively, one could say they are a jazz ensemble—in the instruments they play, and the way they feel the music as one, building a performance together, with grace and grit. Working with Richmonder J. Plunky Branch, the vanguard of Afro-centric jazz, funk, house music, and go-go, the two bands will weave the interrelated musical forms into a forward-looking message of empowerment, positivity, and cultural awareness.
Cora Harvey Armstrong
From King and Queen County, Virginia, Cora Harvey Armstrong served as minister of music for four decades at First Mount Olive Baptist Church. Her songwriting was inspired by the verses of her poet grandfather Rev. Watson Harvey. That songwriting blossomed at Virginia State University, where she directed the internationally acclaimed VSU Gospel Chorale. In recent years, Armstrong has pursued gospel music full-time and has also become a minister.
Jared Pool & Friends
Richmonder Jared Pool is a multi-instrumentalist whose love of music was born from attending bluegrass festivals as a kid. After completing a jazz studies degree, Pool began working with various regional acts as well as our partner, the Virginia Folklife Program. In 2016, Jared was called to play mandolin with legendary guitarist, Larry Keel, and since has shared the stage with Sam Bush, Tyler Childers, The Travellin’ McCourys and Steve Earle.
Kadencia
Kadencia is a 13-piece orchestra comprised of musicians that have toured with some of the best local and internationally renowned bands in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Mid-Atlantic region. Founded in Puerto Rico by singer-songwriter Maurice Sanabria-Ortiz and percussionist Roberto Candelario, Kadencia was reborn in late 2018, with the help of percussionists Maurice “Tito” Sanabria and Santos Ramirez, and now calls Richmond home. The band uses bomba, plena, and salsa to promulgate Puerto Rican culture, educate audiences on the Island’s native musical expressions, and make audiences move in ways they never knew possible!
