Meet Chris Visions, 2023 Poster Artist

We’re excited to have the incredible Richmond-based artist, Chris Visions, create this year’s Folk Festival poster. You may have seen the many gorgeous murals he’s been commissioned to paint around town. In 2023, he joins an esteemed group of artists that includes Wes Freed, Mickael Broth, Katie McBride, Chris Milk, Cassandra Kim, and Hamilton Glass (see all here).

We thought it would be great to ask Chris some questions to learn more about his background and process! This year’s poster will be unveiled September 27. Make sure to catch the unveiling LIVE on Facebook!

Tell us a little bit about you and your background. Are you from Richmond?

I've been drawing since I was four. and created my first mural in red crayon right behind the front door. I'm now an Internationally published, independent artist creating through illustration, comics, TV, movies, music, murals & teaching. I'm originally from Lexington, Virginia, but have called Richmond home since 2003, when I started attending VCU for a degree in Illustration.

Have you attended the Festival before, if so any good memories or thoughts about it?

I attended a few years ago and loved it and the crowd! I particularly remember dancers from many different cultures who shared their traditions through dance, fashion and storytelling. It was a beautiful experience.

What was your inspiration/thought process for the Folk Fest design?

I thought and prayed for a direction, and Odetta came to mind, particularly her 1953 televised performance in France. Though the footage was black and white, her voice illuminated the color, and her sway brought upon the composition. The artwork is created digitally, but everything, including the lettering, is by hand. As technology changes, it's important for me to keep the human, manual touch in my work as much as possible.

What are some of your favorite things to do in Richmond?

The people here have brought me the most joy, and have kept me here. From friends and family to the communities that have nurtured me, they've given me reason to call Richmond home. It's nice to have the feeling of a city, but also the opportunity to get lost in the woods at any time as well. I love finding different routes to walk, or places to post up and sketch. Inspiration flows throughout the entire city, and I love finding new walls to let that inspiration loose on. Painting in Richmond is close to my heart.
